Get ready to learn about five of the biomes that we have been studying about this quarter.  Find out two new facts about each of the biomes. All questions are to be answered using only the sites below.  You may have to search through the sites to various links to locate the information needed.  Good Luck!

Question 1: What is a raptor? (hint:bird)

Answer: They are birds of prey and include some kinds that fly during the day such as hawks, eagles, vultures and falcons, and others that fly at night (owls). They are primarily hunters or scavengers and feed on animals ranging in size from rabbits and skunks to insects.   Most raptors have a hooked beak for tearing meat and talons for killing their prey.   Of the 53 species of raptors found in the United States and Canada, 30 occur regularly in Kansas and an additional six species have made rare appearances.

Question 2: Fisherman who want to catch as many fish as possible use drift nets and trawlers. These are two ways to easily catch a lot of fish, but also catch many other types of animals. Drift nets are huge, sometimes mile long, nets that simply stay in the ocean and catch everything that passes through them.  Different species sometimes share the same habitat.   Can you find four(4) other animals that share the ocean with tuna that are sometimes trapped in the fishermen’s nets?

Question 1: The Tropical Rain Forest contains the more different species of plant and animal life than anywhere else in the world.  Explore the forest a night to find out something about these plants and animals that live here. What type of cat lives in the canopy of the rain forest and what does it like to eat?

Question 2: Searching the forest floor is a frog that can jump 50 feet! The frog is searching for small invertebrates and                                 in pig wallows.

Question 1: One-third of Earth’s landmass is desert.  It is an area with little precipitation and extreme ranges of temperature. Deserts are classified by their geographical location and dominant weather pattern.     Name the six types of Deserts found around the world.

Question 2: The Sonoran Desert of the American Southwest contains many animals and plants.  The main plant that is known for the desert is the cactus.  What is the “tree” of the Sonoran Desert?  

Answer:
The giant saguaro cacti provide nests for desert birds and serve as "trees" of the desert. Saguaro grow slowly but may live 200 years. When 9 years old, they are about 15 centimeters high. After about 75 years, the cacti are tall and develop their first branches. When fully grown, saguaro are 15 meters tall and weigh as much as 10 tons. They dot the Sonoran and reinforce the general impression of deserts as cacti-rich land.
